Think Positive, Act Positive

Events are perceived in a triangle pattern.

First person has their view of the facts; they have their perception of the truth. Person two has their version of the truth as they see it, which is different than the first person’s version. Outside observers have a third “truth” from their vantage point. The center of the triangle contains the actual truth.

As you observe these four different perceptions of truth, reflect on the incidents in your life. As you do your best to step out of your individual impression of the truth, seriously attempt to view the situation from the perspective of the other person. No, it does not mean you are making one of you right and the other wrong; you are simply attempting to understand their view.

If each person truly attempted to understand the way another viewed each situation, we would foster less hostility and controversy in the world. There is a powerful little book in my private library. “Getting to YES, Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In’ by Roger Fisher and William Ury presents answers to resolving situations before they become deadlocked.

Why do conflicts escalate to the point of irreparable deadlock? Could the answer be that we unintentionally, or perhaps intentionally, refuse to consider the viewpoint of others?

Think of yourself as dragging a sack weighing several hundred pounds around with you 24 hours per day. Your shoulders ache, your back hurts and your arms feel like they are being pulled apart at the joints. All of these aches and pains can relate to carrying the guilt, anger or tension contained in that sack. Why carry it when you can step back, attempt to change your view of the events and release that burden? Even though you are not physically carrying that sack, the net result is the same if you are mentally and emotionally carrying it.

Who has the power to start the process of releasing the mental Atlas load? You do. Ok, you say nothing will change until the other party does the same. True, there will not be total harmony and resolution without both parties participation. Someone has to start the process. Even if they do not release the weight, if you do, then your shoulders and soul feel the breath of fragrant air and comforting sunshine. You see, you are not releasing the burden for their sake; you are releasing it for your own benefit.

Emotional ice water does flow into your life. Conflict does occur. Changes happen.

It is not a matter of “if” these things happen, it is a fact that they will happen. Cultivating a millionaire mindset means focusing your time, attention and energy where it will be most productive. Carrying grudges, tension and drama divert your focus from the positive things in your life. The best success plan is to focus on positives. One of those positives is creating harmony and understanding.

Simple steps to peace of mind.
1. Attempt to view the situation from the point of view of the other person
2. Look for resolutions rather than locking into your personal point of view.
3. In the grand scheme of life, how important is this one incident? Sometimes we lock in on something which truly is not that important to us.
4. Release the burden from your soul so you can concentrate of productive matters.
5. Forgive yourself and others.
6. Celebrate all of the positive things in your life. Be grateful for what you have. Time is precious. Relationships can be fragile but some, probably most, are to be treasured.

Handle life’s little dilemmas differently and your smile will glow a little more brightly and your relationships will amazingly glide a bit smoother. Successful people maintain a positive mental attitude. Their influence and workplace attitude are more congenial.

Who knows, your face may even show less wrinkles. Personally, I would consider that a marvelous side benefit of less stress. You will acquire more success through a positive mental attitude than you ever will by locking in on to your point of view.

Millionaire Blueprint

“Build it and they will come,” “See it, believe it, achieve it,” and “We get not what we want or deserve, but what we expect.”

Ever heard any of these expressions? Positive, encouraging and idealistic to be certain but there is also a significant truth component. Despite all of the warm fuzzy feelings, very little will be accomplished until there is a firm decision to take action. The decision comes first, the positive attitude and expectation follow.

No, of course nothing happens unless you take action. Step three must be solid action.

Positive thoughts, affirmations and picturing the success in your mind are all aids to success. True. Until you take action, all of those are little more than a view of the world through rose colored glasses.

While you are dreaming, visualizing and pontificating, the world has a view through smog stained, smudged glasses. The world’s view is not quite so clear and rosy. Reality stands up and declares that until you take positive, consistent and constructive action, it is little more than a daydream. Dream away your life if you choose, but if you really want positive results, you will open your eyes, push up your sleeves and apply your fingers to the keyboard or pen.

Make a specific list of all of the factors as they currently exist. How much money do you have available to start the new project? How much money will it require for office supplies, marketing, telephone, vehicle, office space and accounting software? What other potential expenses do you anticipate? Planning and preparation avoid those ugly “Oh no, I never thought about THAT.” Can you anticipate everything? No, of course not. The more your think and plan in writing, the better. Talk to other successful people in your industry; ply them with questions. Consider asking, “What is it that I have not asked but should have asked you?” Read, study and observe other successful people.

Be extremely specific about the goals you choose to reach. Quantity of sales, gross dollars generated, net dollars generated, and a detailed description of how the successful project or company will appear. Fix the image in intricate detail in your mind. Know exactly what you expect your success image to resemble.

If your success image is a specific new house, then make the image so real that you could actually bump your elbow on the marble mantle and feel the texture of the cool stone.

To truly create a Millionaire Blueprint, you must have 3 distinct entities clearly described.
1. Where are you right now?
2. Exactly how will you plan to go from where you are now to your ultimate goal
3. Picture in intricate detail the ideal goal.

Unless you know where you are, how you plan to make the transition and when you choose to arrive, you have one leg tied to a tree and you are spinning around in little circles. It is like a rocking chair. It is moving but it is not going anywhere.

We have covered the initial criteria for steps one and three. Once you are clear and honest about your current situation and gleefully clear about your goal, you are now ready to formulate a plan to take yourself from start to finish.

Someday Isle

Someday Isle

Picture calm waters, swaying palms and a gentle ocean breeze; you are resting on a peaceful island.  Sounds like paradise.  Dreaming of paradise seems like a wonderful way to spend your time.

What are you doing right now with your time?  If you are spending endless hours dreaming of Someday Isle, your life is quietly slipping away.

What else is on your “someday I’ll” list?  Have you examined your priorities and promised yourself that you will spend more time with your family?  Promises to spend more time with the kids, attend all of their school activities and even follow up on their homework assignments frequently slip off the priority list and drift off to “someday I’ll.”  After all, you have responsibilities.  You have your career, your household duties and your golf game.  You really plan to spend more time with the family; you just run out of hours.

Giving back of our time and talent to the community frequently drifts down the priority list to the bottom or even off the list completely.  We give it lip service and promise ourselves that next year we will do better.  Next year seldom arrives.  Next year’s community service is also on “Someday I’ll.”

Have you given lip service to improving your income, getting out of debt, or restoring your credit rating?  Maybe you are saying to yourself, “I just don’t have the time to research all of the options.”  “I know I need to research how to get out of debt and get my credit rating up but by the time I get home from work, I’m just too tired to deal with it.”  “If I go to a debt reduction firm, half of my money goes to them rather than paying down my debt.”

These are all valid thoughts.  Nothing changes until you take action.  If not now, when?  Just as dreaming your life away may be pleasurable, but unproductive, so is procrastinating about important details for your future.  Putting off handling your financial future will be damaging to your retirement years.  Once time is gone, it can not be retrieved.  Every day you put off taking action is one less day you have to recover.

Let’s put it in terms of your physical health.  If you know smoking, high blood pressure or excessive weight is shortening the life of someone you love, wouldn’t you try to help them?  Of course you would.  I don’t mean to nag but at least speak lovingly to them.   Tell them you want to enjoy their company for many more years.

If you can do this for someone you love, why not help yourself and your family when it comes to your finances.  There are low cost solutions.  Help is available.  Just like the loved one with health issues, nothing positive happens until someone takes action.

Living on Someday Isle does not solve problems, it only postpones decision day.

Attitude is a Major Key to Success

Has anyone ever told you they would call you, but didn’t? Did you make excuses for them? Maybe some emergency popped up. Maybe they didn’t write the phone number down correctly. Maybe they forgot. Did you give them several excuses? Sure most of us have done that from time to time. Some of those excuses may actually be valid reasons at the time; however, it does not ease the feelings of the one who was expecting the call.

Did you ever tell someone that you would do something and then didn’t do it for whatever reason? Ah, now those excuses are somehow magically transformed into reasons. Amazing what a difference it makes whether we are the caller or the one expecting the call.

You can choose to believe the best about the person or assume the worst. Believing the best works for the first few times but after awhile when the failed promise occurs too many times, it becomes a pattern. When we keep making excuses for someone, even ourselves, we remove the necessity to change the behavior.

Are you doing the same thing with your career? Are you making excuses why you should hang on to that job you really do not like? Maybe you are saying to yourself, “How do I know that something better is out there?” Guaranteed, you will never know if you do not step out of your discomfort zone.” Yes, I said discomfort zone.

Why are you staying in the job if you do not really like it? Are you staying because it is familiar? Honestly examine the circumstances. Take a large yellow legal pad and draw a vertical line down the center of the page. On the left side write everything you do not like about the job or things you would like to change about the job. On the right column, write everything you desire to have in your career. Include the amount of money you choose to earn, the freedom of time, freedom of duties, and opportunity to advance. Your workplace attitude, career focus, has a significant effect on your future.

Carefully examine both columns. Be honest with yourself. Are you living the life you dreamed you would be living? What is stopping you from stepping out of that self-imposed box and reaching for your dreams? Is it fear? For some it is fear of failure and for others, it is fear of success. The way to overcome the fear is to make what you desire more important than your fear. Your workplace attitude is a major part of your success plan. Are you making excuses in order to avoid making a change?

Just like the person who did not call, by making excuses you remove the desire and necessity to change. What is it that you truly desire and deserve?

Nothing happens until you stop making excuses and start taking action. It is your future. The longer you delay, the less time you have to enjoy the future. Money does not disappear, it simply changes hands. Those with a creative entrepreneurial mindset will profit in any economy. The economy changes. Does your mindset take a dive off the top diving board into the black hole of depression? You may not control the economy but you do control your attitude. You are in 100% control of your entrepreneurial mindset.

Henry Ford reminds us that “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”

You are in control, or at least can be in control, of your thoughts, feelings and attitudes. Despite the events of the economy, you still have the ability to control your mind.

Have you read stories of a petite woman who lifted a car to save her child’s life? Have you read other seemingly impossible feats of strength and courage? Unless you have been hiding in a dark closet somewhere all of your life, you have heard of some extraordinary feats of strength or courage.

Your abilities are largely controlled by your mind. If you believe strongly enough that you can accomplish your goals, you will find a way to do so. Are you looking for reasons to succeed or excuses to allow yourself to give up? The entrepreneurial mindset absolutely requires courage, conviction and determination. True entrepreneurs keep searching for a path through the turbulent economic waters until they reach a stretch with true flow.

Flow means when you are making more forward progress than backward movement. Have we all experienced the one stroke forward and two or three strokes backward? Absolutely. The difference is that an individual with a true entrepreneurial mindset does not allow the temporary backward strokes to stop them.

When you make the achievement of your goal more important and more powerful than your challenges, you will find your flow. Make the achievement of the goal a firm feature of your entrepreneurial mindset. With your attitude set and unwavering, you will succeed. Without an unwavering entrepreneurial mindset, you will swim in circles. You may be moving but you will not be progressing. Strive for upward spirals, not circles.

79 million people will start a home business in the next three years according to this recent report in Forbes magazine.  American forefathers left England and came to America to build their businesses.  The entrepreneur has always been the backbone of America.  Edison, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Ford, Carnegie, Rockefeller, Gates and so many others were all entrepreneurs.  Every one of them started and developed their own business.  Why not you?

Why start your own business?  You control your income potential; you do not have a boss setting a salary or bonus cap on your earnings.  You set your own hours; no one tells you what time to arrive, take your break, take your lunch or what time to leave at night.  You no longer have to ask permission for a day off or a vacation.  Your duties are also your decision.  Sound good?

Even the beautiful petals of a rose and the heady perfume of its soft fragrance have a down side.   A rose bush has thorns.  Owning and operating your own business requires work.  Yes, I know.  Bummer.  The price you pay for all of those wonderful benefits is the responsibility of accomplishing all of the tasks necessary to make a business successful.

Decision one requires that you do something you know.  Either you already possess the necessary knowledge to be successful or you start learning.  Unless you already know exactly what you want to do, it is time to start assessing factors.

Before I started Mountain Castles Property Management, I asked questions and listened until I discovered a niche which needed to be filled.  Steamboat needed a property management company specializing in single family homes.  They wanted to rent homes on a yearly basis, a vacation basis or an executive basis.  An executive home does not rent; however, it must be cared for during the owner’s absence.  In some cases, the home needed attention even during the owner’s stay.

My knowledge was grossly insufficient in property management.  Reading books, attending classes and working for another property management company provided the training.

Decision two requires writing a detailed business plan.  What equipment, facilities, and supplies will be required?  How much will it cost?  What is the income projection?  What advertising will be used to achieve that income?  What about office staff?  The list goes on and on.  Prior planning avoids being blindsided by expenses.

Be optimistic but add a dash of realism.  You will not start out earning 20,000 income per month.  You will have unexpected expenses.  One of the jokes in building a new home is that it will take twice as long as expected and cost twice as much.  If you do not plan carefully, starting a new business can follow that same scenario.

Accurate record keeping is essential.  If you have a question about keeping a receipt or not, write every detail on it and file it where you can find it.  The IRS loves paper.  The steps to start a small business are quite simple and direct; however skipping any of them is not an option.

1. Find a niche doing something you enjoy
2. Either already posses the knowledge or acquire it
3. Write a detailed business plan which includes every potential cost or situation
4. Implement the plan.  Knowledge without action has far less value.
5. Keep a very positive mental attitude and keep moving forward
6. Celebrate every little success on the way to the big successes

The steps to start a small business are not difficult.  In a tough economy, starting small business may be easier than finding that magic job.

You will always be more productive, more profitable and more emotionally satisfied when you are working in your passion.  When you are passionate about what you do for a living, it is easier to get out of bed in the morning.  You are actually eager to get to the office.  Does that feel like traveling in a foreign land without a map to you?  If being happy about your career is totally foreign to you, then it is time to seriously examine your career choice.

Remember as a child how you had wild and wonderful dreams about how life could be when you grew up?  What happened to that childish wonder and excitement?  As a child did you imagine yourself as wealthy?

Examine your wealth builders blueprint.  Did you forget to even make one or is it covered with years of dust?  Unfortunately, it is probably not gold dust.  Time to dust it off and reinvigorate your dreams.  Your dreams are the first step in your wealth builders blueprint.

What is a dream anyway?

D – Decide what you truly want

R – Refine it down to a specific goal

E – Examine all of the factors involved in making it come true

A – Action plan to achieve

M – Maintain consistent, persistent, focused action

Deciding what you truly want can be accomplished by paying close attention to your energy.  When do you feel the most invigorated and inspired?  What are you doing when time just flies by without glancing at the clock every five minutes or having the overwhelming urge to jump up and get another cup of coffee?  When do you feel the greatest sense of satisfaction?  Where does your mind wander to in your daydreams?  All of these are clues as to your passion – your area of highest productivity, profitability and satisfaction.

Refining all of these thoughts, activities and “what if” ideas into the one most important goal is a process.  Be careful not to talk yourself out of your dream by saying it can’t happen.  Approach the process as if EVERYTHING is possible.  When you want something badly enough and really focus on it, there is usually a way to achieve it.  Napoleon Hill said, “What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Examine all of the factors involved.  Do you need more training?  Do you need to tap into a positive mastermind group who share your quest for achieving a dream?  Careful, no bar room benefactors, they tend to be negative; they are dream stealers.  Look at finances, education, and skills.  You will have to move.  Move your mind in a new direction; move your time priorities; move your seat off the couch and into action.

Form an action plan with step by step activities to move you constantly toward your goal.  It may not be fast but keep checking to be certain you are on course.  Revisit the plan frequently and be certain you have not veered off course.

Maintain consistent, persistent and focused action all headed toward the achievement of the goal.  This means daily.  Your dream becomes a 24-7-365 focus.  You dream about its accomplishment at night, take action on it during the day and daydream about how your life will feel when you are successful.
